How beautiful are the feet of Bill Murray.
Did you know Bill Murray has a clothing line for golf? Here’s a tag. Notice the little message.
“How beautiful are the feet” of Bill Murray.
I don’t know Mr. William Murray personally or know if his relationship with God fits very neatly inside the label you or I would call “orthodox”, but I believe the gospel he preaches (indeed, even clothes himself and others with) is the gospel many of you need to hear this finals week:
You can relax.
Taking it a step further, the reason why we can relax - the heart of all we believe as gospel:
God loves you.
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life - whether you will pass your final exam or find the girl you will spend the rest of your life with. Isn’t life more than girlfriends, and your body more than degrees? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?”
- Matt. 6:25-26, Wes’ College Student Translation
You can relax. God loves you.
Don’t worry yourself with doing God stuff if you’re not God. If you’re a bird, do bird stuff. If you’re a lilly, do lilly stuff. If you’re a person, do person stuff. If you’re a golfer, do golfer stuff.
A golfer doesn’t exclusively get holes in one. A golfer simply golfs.
Take up your club and swing for the hole like you might actually get a hole in one because, dude, what if it actually worked??! I have never had a hole-in-one myself, but I imagine it’s accompanied by a sense of ecstatic unbelief, like you were simply a part of something too miraculous and beyond yourself to take full credit for.
Something transcendent.
Don’t take up your club and swing like you absolutely need to get a hole in one. It’ll screw up your shot and rob you of joy, even when you do play a stellar game.
When it comes to golf, there’s very little you actually need to do apart from getting a little closer to the hole and having a good time.
This week, be the best you can be at everything. Aim for the green. Avoid that sand trap. Relax. After all, God loves you.
